Quiet by design.

Sotto sits in a small bar at the top of your screen, hears the other side of the call, and gives you something natural to say.

  1. Install and open SottoDrag it to Applications. The first-time screen below explains the one-time macOS prompt.
  2. Let it set itself upOne button, one progress bar. Keep your Mac online until it says everything is ready.
  3. Start listeningPress Alt + R when your call begins. Sotto hears your computer's audio, never your microphone.

Opening Sotto for the first time

Sotto isn't signed with an Apple Developer ID, so macOS asks you to confirm it once. This is normal for independent apps and takes about 20 seconds.

  1. Open the downloaded .dmg and drag Sotto to ApplicationsThen open Sotto from Applications. macOS shows a message that it couldn't verify the app. Click Done (not Move to Trash).
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & SecurityScroll down to the message “Sotto was blocked” and click Open Anyway. Enter your password if asked.
  3. Allow Screen & System Audio RecordingWhen Sotto asks, switch it on in the same Privacy & Security screen. This is how it hears the call. Reopen Sotto if macOS asks you to.
Prefer the Terminal? After copying Sotto to Applications, run this once and it will open normally:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Sotto.app

Questions

Is it really private?

Yes. The AI model and the speech recognition both run on your Mac. Sotto doesn't have accounts, and your audio and answers never leave your computer. The only internet use is the one-time setup download and an occasional check for new versions.

Does it use my microphone?

No. It listens to your computer's audio output, which is the other person on the call. It needs the “Screen & System Audio Recording” permission to do that.

What Mac do I need?

An Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer) running macOS 13 or later, with 8 GB of memory or more. About 3 GB of free disk space is needed for the standard setup.

Why does macOS show a warning?

Apple's automatic checks only cover apps from developers enrolled in its paid program. Sotto is distributed independently, so you confirm it once. The steps above show how.

Will it stay hidden when I share my screen?

Sotto is built to stay out of shared screens, but how well that works depends on your meeting app and macOS version. Always run a quick test share before anything important.

How do I update?

Sotto tells you when a new version is available. Download it from this page and replace the old app in Applications. Your settings and downloaded engines are kept.

Is it okay to use in an interview?

That depends on the rules of whoever you're interviewing with. Check what's allowed before you use any assistant, and use Sotto responsibly. It's also handy for practice runs.
